3 1 day ago Full Job Description MAIN FUNCTION:
Performs secretarial / clerical activities necessary to the efficient functioning of the Behavioral Science Unit.
Works collaboratively with Hospital staff to ensure a professional, neat and safe working environment.
DUTIES AND
Responsibilities:
Demonstrates courteous behavior and promotes professional image through polite and respectful communication with all co-workers, patients and visitors.
Provides direction and information as appropriate.
Speaks professionally on the telephone as part of coordinating unit communications and reports telephone messages to appropriate persons.
Updates report sheet for the next shift and other correspondence as necessary.
Files reports and records according to department procedures.
Organizes Hospital forms in the appropriate storage locations necessary for the efficient operation of the department.
Assembles and completes information on patient charts (including orientation materials).
Inserts additional chart forms as needed.
Distributes mail to patients.
Charts vital signs of patients on graphic sheets in the patient's medical record and meals and/or nourishments on the reassessment sheet.
Follows established procedures for admission, transfer, and discharge of patients.
Collects statistical data regarding performance improvement activities and program objectives, such as DNR and invasive procedure information.
Assists with maintaining required inventory levels of medical/surgical and office supplies.
Maintains kardex and all other records as required.
Accurately transcribes physician orders under direct supervision of professional nursing staff.
Works with Nursing Unit Director to coordinate all necessary unit maintenance and repairs.
Enters requests for lab tests into computer (Meditech) system and prepares paper lab slips, if computer is nonfunctional.
Records phoned lab repots on draft and reports results to charge nurse and physician if so directed.
Schedules all inpatient appointments and tests, including medical consults and notes them on the kardex.
Escorts patients to appointments and diagnostic tests as assigned.
Maintains both logs for patients' visitors, and unit visitors.
Assists with setting up aftercare appointments, if indicated.
Accurately labels and transports specimens to laboratory, 100% of the time.
Assists physician on rounds if indicated.
May perform open area rounds on patients.
Documents location and description of behavior on the appropriate CSO, SO, or routine rounds sheet.
Informs charge nurse of any unusual telephone calls, patient behaviors or statements, or incidents such as falls, patient altercations or missing patient.
Responds appropriate and professionally in emergency situations.
Remains calm in crisis situations.
Initiates Dr.
White/Dr.
Red/Dr.
Blue/Dr.
Green/Child Alert State, if appropriate.
c, Directs responders to area of disturbance/emergency.
Assists with maintaining door security during crisis.
Assists nursing staff in directing other patients and visitors to areas of safety.
Assists in the maintenance of a safe and therapeutic milieu for both patients and staff.
Performs with ITA staff a safety check of the duress system on a daily basis.
Reports any failure of the system.
Ensure that the unit doors are locked at all times.
Ensures all visitors (patient/hospital/community) sign-in/out in the appropriate log.
Ensures that visitor information regarding unit rules and visiting hours is available.
Reports any unaddressed maintenance or housekeeping issues to the Unit Director or Nursing Director and to the appropriate department.
Signs in/out approved contraband items on sharp sign out sheet.
Accounts for all all items remaining at the end of the shift.
Demonstrates understanding of unit's disaster policies and procedures (Dr.
Red/Yellow/White/Green) Provides nursing station and unit coverage (makes phone calls to help cover call-ins) as required.
Promotes and fosters the mission and philosophy of the Hospital during performance of job duties and community activities.
Actively supports and participates in the Hospital's Performance Improvement endeavors.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Assists in the provisions of immediate care and/or treatment for patients, ages 17 to 100
years, experiencing physiological, psycho-social or souci-economic need.

Is responsible for attending all mandatory annual educational programs as required by the position.

SAFETY:
This position requires you to follow standard precaution guidelines in all work situations.
COMPETENCY:
Completion of formal continuing education and training directly related to job responsibilities demonstrated by completion certificates or grade reports.
Certification/credentials by the employee's state or national accrediting body.
EDUCATION:
High School Graduate.
Experience:
Office experience desired, healthcare setting preferred.
One year clerical/secretarial experience strongly preferred.
Familiarity with medical terminology either by course or experience.
Knowledge of filing procedures.
Ability to accurately type and operate computer software.
CARDIOPULMONARY RESUSCITATION (CPR) REQUIREMENTS:
No CPR required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Good mental and physical health.
May be required to assists unit personnel in restraining out of control patients following unit protocols as needed.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Empathy and sensitivity to needs of patients.
Demonstrates understanding, patience and tact in dealing with patients and visitors.
Ability to maintain good working relationships with Hospital personnel and medical staff.
